ReWater MENA project calls for contributions to a regional sourcebook on water reuse

During a session held on April 1, 2019, at Land and Water Days, which took place in Cairo from March 31 to April 4, 2019, Javier Mateo Sagasta, leader of the ReWater MENA project (J.Mateo-Sagasta@cgiar.org), called for expressions of interest in contributing to a three-volume regional sourcebook. The first volume, “Evolution, status and future prospects of water reuse in Mena,” aims to raise awareness of the risks of unsafe reuse and economic benefits of wastewater as a resource in the region and to discuss evidence-based challenges and opportunities to tap reuse potential in MENA. The second volume, “Catalogue of featured case studies,” will compile the most relevant case studies on water reuse for agriculture in the region. The third volume, “Guidelines,” will comprise thematic guidelines for different audiences (practitioners in the field, policy makers, etc.) based on lessons learned from the cases in volume 2.

The session offered a good opportunity to present the ReWater MENA project and to discuss with representatives from government ministries, the private sector and research institutions means of cooperating in the development of the sourcebook.

IWMI is a partner in the organization of Land and Water Days (LWD), lead by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). LWD reviews progress in addressing water scarcity in the region, fosters the exchange of knowledge and experience, and charts the way forward, taking into account lessons learned as well as new challenges and opportunities for sustainable development. While focusing on the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region, the event also reflected global perspectives through the participation of countries and experts from other regions (Asia, Africa and Latin America).
